Western Hospital recently celebrated their 30th anniversary on 22nd May 2015. Previously known as Western Infirmary (Pvt) Ltd, the hospital is now rebranded as Western Hospital
and is located at 218, Cotta Road, Borella. The team behind Western Hospital has a long standing history in Sri Lanka – they were the pioneers behind the first kidney transplant in Sri Lanka which took place 30 years ago.
The anniversary was officially celebrated at the Ramada Hotel, with His Excellency Hon. Maithripala Sirisena, Health Minister and the Minister of Finance pledging their support.
Western Hospital, an SME, is a seven-storeyed boutique healthcare facility that has gained local and international recognition over decades of medical care, particularly relating to kidney disease. They introduced haemodialysis to the private sector in Sri Lanka in 1984, and sponsored and conducted the first kidney transplant in the private sector in the island. Ever since then, Western Hospital has continued their excellent kidney service and has taken part in the steady growth of nephrology in Sri Lanka.
The hospital was the very first speciality hospital in the private sector, and was awarded grants by the President’s Fund. It earns valuable foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, via medical tourism, with services that are highly sought after for reliable, affordable and ethical kidney transplants in the island.
Given its popularity and excellent services over the years, Western Hospital is transitioning to a new era, by continuously advancing specialty services of renal care and transplantation in addition to diversifying and improving other core areas and new service lines related to the healthcare industry in Sri Lanka.
Although Western Hospital is an SME, it has brought national honour and helped nephrology advance in Sri Lanka and is well known as one of the most reliable kidney care facilities in the country. It has the longest running kidney transplant and dialysis program in Sri Lanka, and has performed over 100,000 dialyses and over 1000 kidney transplants both locally and internationally over three decades.
The founder and chairman of Western Hospital, Vidyajyothi Professor Rezvi Sheriff, regarded to be the ‘Father of Nephrology’ in Sri Lanka, was an eminent researcher, lecturer and mentor at University of Colombo for more than four decades, and now serves as the Senior Professor of Medicine of General Sir John Kotelawala University Medical School. He was bestowed the highest national honour of ‘Vidyajyothi’, for his outstanding contributions to nephrology in Sri Lanka.
The pioneering and relentless efforts of Professor Rezvi Sheriff and his team and support staff of Western Hospital have helped advance the state units and specialists in kidney disease and transplant surgery in Sri Lanka.
Western Hospital is a family run hospital that is registered and operational as a Private company in Sri Lanka. They have dialysis units in Karapitiya, Kalutara and Jaffna in the private sector, which is a great service to people who live away from the capital, ensuring that they will have access to kidney care.
